There’s a saying that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. Probably because the celebratory nature of the holiday is so infectious, we all want to be part of it. And sure, the bar scene is bustling, but it’s also really nice to have some friends over for a quieter – but no less festive – St. Patrick’s Day celebration at home. A green cocktail, like an Appletini or the Cucumber Melon Cooler, is essential on this holiday. Leave the green beer for the college kids – you’ve got something better to sip.
And to bring a bit more green to your holiday, try this easy tip for making simple (and cheap!) white carnations turn green. Just grab a bunch from your supermarket or corner store, and cut the stems sharply on the diagonal, exposing a nice portion of the inside of the stem. Mix water with green food coloring in a vase (find gel food coloring if you can, otherwise regular food coloring will be fine) until the water is a vivid green. Place the flowers in the water. 24 hours later, your carnations will be tinged with green – and you’ve got your St. Patrick’s Day centerpiece!
To adorn your table even more, cut out shamrock shaped green cardboard paper and write out some of your favorite Irish sayings on them, and distribute them about. Here are a few to get you started:
“May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.”
“There are only two kinds of people in the world, The Irish and those who wish they were.”
“If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, then you’re lucky enough.”
“A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures.”
Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Sláinte!
